Statement Most people notice environmental problems only when they are personally affected or when a newsworthy catastrophe occurs. The Alaskan oil spill dominated headlines for a few weeks before the great news maw became hungry for something else, but the effects of the spill will be with us for years. Even less attention is paid to subtler problems. Toxic air, global warming, acid rain degrade the quality of our lives little by little. Nothing dramatic. By the time the warning lights go on, a few hundred thousand per-year have silently died from breathing related disorders, and we've learned to stay in our air-conditioned homes on certain days. Conservationists are viewed as gloomy Cassandra's. People would rather change the channel and double check their profit margin. There are solutions, however, that can create jobs and profits. It just takes a longer viewpoint. Editor, National Geographic
