Horse Latitudes Day
after day, day after day, So goes the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner". Lamenting over the fate of his sailing ship. Caught in the doldrums, surrounded by an endless supply of water, but none fit to drink. In the times of the tall ships, sailors who unfortunately found themselves in this predicament where said to have thrown the horses they carried as cargo into the ocean to drown. This cruel act would save the precious fresh water supplies for the ship's crew. This windless region of ocean became know as the "Horse Latitudes". In his poem "The Horse Latitudes", Jim Morrison also laments the veracity of this nightmarish place. In the painting "The Horse Latitudes" the horses seek their revenge. Haunting this ship as it sails forever across an endless sea, just like the albatross cursed the Ancient Mariner for its senseless murder.
