Desert Song Flutes Playing Instructions

Getting Started:

You play this flute by blowing across the mouth hole. The proper playing position is gained by feeling the edge of the hole with your lower lip. You then blow the word "Too" over the hole. The lips should be relaxed. Blow steadily across the flute at a 45 degree angle. Leave all the holes open and work an obtaining a good tone before moving on.

Holding The Flute:

Support the flute with the thumb on your left hand & your thumb & ring finger on your right hand. Your left hand should be on the opposite side of the flute with the index, middle & ring fingers using the first three holes. Your right hand should be on the same side of the flute as your lips with the index, middle & pinkie fingers working on the 4th 5th & 6th holes. The ring finger on your right hand rests between the 5th & 6th holes & places opposing pressure against the thumb underneath.

Moving On:

For fingering, place the pad of the first finger (index) on your left hand over the first hole. Play this note until it becomes clear. Next, place the second finger (middle) over the second hole. Move down until all holes are covered. This will be the low G note. Refer to the fingering diagram to learn all the notes. Learn to play by practicing the G major & C major scales in the low octave.

G Maj. G A B C D E F# G

C Maj. C D E F G A B C

If you desire to play the high octave you'll need to blow harder through a smaller opening between your lips. The Desert Song Flute is an excellent instrument for playing by ear. Once the basic finger movements become easy you'll be able to pick out pleasing combinations of sounds and soon be able to improvise your own music.

Enjoy The Music!
